European Union
Malta is a member of the European Union and is to form part of the soon to be emlarged Schengen Area Agreement. Any person having residency in Malta, whatever their nationality, will have the added benefit of being able to travel within all the 24 countries within the Schengen Area without a visa. This is particularly attractive to persons who normally require a visa for travel within countries such as Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Greece and the Netherlands.

Conditions for permanent residence

• There are no restrictions on the
    applicant's nationality

• There is no minimum residence stay
    requirement

• An applicant for permanent 
  residency must own a residence
  purchased for not less than   
  €156,000 in the case of a house 
  OR   € 93,000 in the case of an
  apartment


• A remittance of only €15,000 per 
  year to Malta, for tax and running
  expenses

• Tax at 15% is levied on income 
   remitted to Malta subject to a
   minimum tax liability of €4,200

• There is no inheritance or gift taxes

• There is no wealth tax

• No customs or import duty is
   payable on personal effects upon
   moving to Malta
